13 Questions with Ade – Pretty happy with my haircut and does Bollocks count?

Ade released his debut album, Midnight Pizza last month. A concept with which we can all get on board. 13 Questions needed answers.

Ade is an innovative singer/songwriter and producer based in New York City.

A child of the algorithmic listening generation, a potent mix of technological advancement and eclectic influence have nurtured an artist far from natural expectation. Extracting from the esoteric with a cut-and-paste like approach, Ade cites eclectic references from Beck to Bjork to Weezer, with his own creations straddling just about everything in-between.

April saw his his confidently abstract debut album: Midnight Pizza.

A record where fantasy and reality entwine often paradoxically, Midnight Pizza is a coming of age record for the millennial generation.

Written over the past 5 years, it finds Ade re-evaluating that familiar road that leads us all to so-called adulthood. At once intimidatingly complex and acutely referential, Midnight Pizza also sports the kind of inviting danceability that places it amongst peers like Caribou, Toro Y Moi or Gold Panda

We fired off some questions.

Where are you and what are you doing?

I’m in a cab on the way to get my hair cut

What is your favourite view?

Big fan of the ocean

What is your favourite swear word and why?

I like how British people say Bollocks. Does that count?

What was the first record / cd you bought with your own money?

The Blue Album by Weezer.

Marmite. Yes, or no?

Gonna go with No but admittedly I don’t have a ton of experiences involving Marmite so I’m open to Marmite enlightenment…Marmitenment.

If you could go to a gig right now, anywhere in the world, which band would you see? And in which venue?

I wanna see Pharaoh Sanders and Floating Points do that record [Listen to Promises] with the London Phil at…let’s call it Royal Albert. Or in a big field.

Who are your musical influences?

Bjork, Squarepusher, Q Tip, Backstreet Boys, Tom Waits, Dust Brothers, Phantom of the Opera, Dr. Dre, Dr. John, Dr. Phil.

Depends on my mood but right now I’m gonna say soft scrambled with cheese.

Tell us something we don’t know.

Can’t right now gotta walk into this haircut.

Which city do you recommend we visit – and why?

I love Austin, TX so much. It’s the only city I’ve been to that I felt I could actually live in. Music and insane food everywhere. Alamo Drafthouse, bunch of bowling alley dudes . That’s my kind of town.

What’s your drink of choice?

Perrier with lemon. Fresh squeezed orange juice is also pretty bangin‘.

What band or album do you think we should check out right now?

I really like Yves Tumor.

Do you have anything else to declare?

I’m pretty happy with my haircut.
