13 Questions with Ġenn and new EP, Liminal, released today. And an Espresso Martini.

ĠENN announce the release of their six track EP, Liminal, today. This is a Good Thing. We also have 13 Qs from Janelle, who now has the record for the speediest response.

We’re huge fans of ĠENN over here, so it was a welcome addition to our inbox when the band announced the release of their EP Liminal, out today on Everything Sucks Music.

Previously teased with single Mackerel’s Funky Mission, we now get a six track belter from the bass heavy first track Feel to the hooky refrain of closer Falling Out, through rock’n’roll, psychedelia and funked-up, post-punk vibes, Liminal is a journey.

Mackerel’s Funky Mission is an escapist anthem which sees vocalist Leona Farrugia chanting hauntingly as she inhabits the soul of a fish in a bid to free her mind from the confines of Covid-mandated lockdown, and undesirable situations in general.

23rd March was also inspired by the unfolding political events of 2020 and Feel personifies a relationship with drugs through drone-centred psychedelia in an ode to 70’s music and jamming.

The collection as a whole is a musical joy of pop punk weirdness and ready to mess with your brain.

ĠENN’s line-up is completed by Janelle Borg (guitar), Leanne Zammit (bass) and Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums).

We fired off our 13 Questions and Janelle sent them back pretty much by return.

Liminal EP

Where are you and what are you doing?
Hello, Janelle here! I’m currently at my apartment in Brighton sorting out ĠENN stuff on my computer.

What is your favourite view?
This >

Riviera Bay, Malta

What is your favourite swear word and why?
What a bloody fucking egg. Just because it’s funny and it’s specifically dedicated to people that annoy the hell out of me.

What was the first record / cd you bought with your own money?
MOJO Magazine’s compilation album which featured Paul McCartney’s blues influences. There were some awesome artists like The Platters, Gene Vincent and Ray Charles.

Marmite. Yes, or no?
I must say that I’ve never tried Marmite. Will try anything once!

If you could go to a gig right now, anywhere in the world, which band would you see? And in which venue?
A cheeky trip to L’International in Paris for an intimate, Warpaint comeback.

Who are your musical influences?
Honestly, anything that piques my interest. I can go from Dua Lipa to Dream Theater in a split second.

How do you like your eggs?
Poached eggs on sourdough toast.

Tell us something we don’t know.
Leona and my first gig as Cryptic Street included a cover version of ‘Sex On Fire’ at a Christian gathering in front of a priest. Random AF.

Which city do you recommend we visit – and why?
Valletta! Repping my home country’s capital city – it’s so fricking beautiful and there are awesome cafes and restaurants in every corner.

What’s your drink of choice?
Espresso martini.

What band or album do you think we should check out right now?
Djun and their album ‘Il-Hlas’.

Do you have anything else to declare?
Don’t forget to check out our latest single – ‘Mackerel’s Funky Mission’ on all platforms. Sending you socially distanced hugs from Brighton!
